A Doubles Take

Bryan Brothers in Olympic SemiFinal

It’s time that broadcast companies look at airing more doubles and mixed doubles play.  It is entertaining and quick.  Most of us do relate to it and like the strategies involved.  Mike Bryan agrees; “Five, six years ago, you would find a lot of inexperienced singles plays that you could exploit… Every match is a new game plan, a new strategy. It’s just going to be interesting combinations.” Sure, it doesn’t always carry the major star power that singles does, but with more and more top players competing in both singles and doubles within the same tournament, it can offer your favorites playing with partners you may not always know, and playing an entirely different game.  It’s fast and exciting enough that even non-tennis players will appreciate the play.

Rick Limpert contributed this article about Olympics Doubles in the Examiner.com from July 31st, 2012.

“At most week to week ATP and WTA events, doubles is more of an afterthought than must-see tennis; it is getting a lot of attention and television time at the 2012 Olympics in London.”  Rick brings up the “star power” that Federer, Djokovic and the William’s Sisters bring to the Olympics Doubles competition, but also states something fundamental in my opinion about televising big tournaments in general; “Since the average tennis fan relates to, and plays doubles at their own country clubs and public tennis facilities, they like seeing how the best players in the world do when playing with a partner.”

Check out NBC Olympics website to see full replays of your favorites (you can also see winning matches from the 2008 Beijing Olympics). Americans Mike and Bob Bryan defeated Frenchmen Benneteau and Gasquet today in the men’s semifinals and play for a medal tomorrow against Team Spain or the other French Team in the finals.
